Freelancing in the United Kingdom
The UK is the second-largest client market for freelance work and a large supplier of it. Registration and tax run through HMRC's Self Assessment, and the VAT threshold is the number most freelancers watch. This page covers the structure, with a rate calculator in pounds.

Work out your rate in GBP
The calculator is set to GBP with defaults that are plausible for United Kingdom. Replace them with your own figures. The method is explained on the rate calculator page, and there are versions tuned to 24 professions.
What the data says about UK rates
Published figures from sources dated within the last two years, all in pounds as the publishers recorded them. They come from freelance platforms, a job-ad aggregator and one freelancer survey, so each row says which kind of number it is. Day rates here are before tax and platform fees. The UK is better covered than most countries on this site, but only six professions have a figure.
| Marketing consultant | Platform mean of £536 a day on Malt, with experience bands from £348 at 0 to 2 years to £836 at 15 years or more. YunoJuno's platform average for marketing and communications is £418 a day, and its 2025 report gives £491 for market research, the nearest label it uses. Confidence is moderate to good, since three platform sources sit between £418 and £536. |
|---|---|
| Data analyst | Platform mean of £521 a day on Malt for data analysts. YunoJuno's average for data and analytics is £501 a day, and its 2025 report gives £469 for data. Confidence is good, because the three figures fall within about 10 percent of each other. |
| UX designer | Platform mean of £445 a day on Malt, from 300 UX designers, running from £336 at 0 to 2 years to £510 at 15 years or more. YunoJuno's platform average is £452 a day. Confidence is good, since two independent platforms nearly match. |
| Graphic designer | Platform mean of £363 a day on Malt for graphic designers. For design as a whole, Malt gives £381 and YunoJuno £385 a day. Confidence is moderate for the graphic figure because it comes from one source. |
| Web developer | A job-ad median of £494 a day for UK contractor web developer roles, £600 in London and £463 elsewhere, with the middle half running from £423 to £675. This is what employers advertise, not what gets paid, and it rests on 16 quoted day rates out of 33 vacancies, so confidence is moderate. The hourly figures on the same page rest on a single quote and are left out. |
| Software development | Platform averages of £508 a day on Malt for IT experts and developers and £533 on YunoJuno for software engineering. YunoJuno lists cloud and infrastructure work separately at £566 a day, so the general figure does not include it. A contract marketplace reports median hourly rates for developers on active UK contracts of $37 at mid level (2 to 5 years), $49 at senior (5 to 8 years) and $57 at 8 years or more, in US dollars as published, from 1,002 contracts with juniors excluded. Confidence is good for the day rates. |
| Writing | Malt's single group for communications experts and editors, which bundles journalists, copywriters, translators and proofreaders, has a mean of £401 a day. It cannot be split by profession, so it is background only. Confidence is low to moderate. |
The wider picture
YunoJuno's 2025 report puts the average UK day rate across all disciplines at £390 (£49 an hour), and the top 10 percent of earners at £708 (£89 an hour). The 2026 report averages £410 a day across its twelve UK disciplines. The Freelancer Confidence Index for the third quarter of 2024 is a self-reported survey of 363 freelancers. It gives an average day rate of £576 overall, £704 for managerial grades, £666 for professional grades and £412 for associate professional and technical grades. The survey has no split by profession.
Malt's aggregate figures displayed a euro symbol when the pages were read, although the listings beneath them are tagged in pounds, so the Malt figures are recorded as pounds with that caveat.
Getting paid in United Kingdom
Domestic clients pay by bank transfer through Faster Payments or BACS, usually the same day. International clients pay through Wise, PayPal or Payoneer, settling to a pound account within a few days. Put your invoice details on the invoice itself, including sort code and account number, using the invoice generator.

Frequently asked questions
When do I have to register with HMRC?
By 5 October following the end of the tax year in which you started trading. Registering earlier avoids a rush before the January deadline.
Should I register for VAT before £90,000?
If most of your clients are VAT-registered businesses, voluntary registration lets you reclaim VAT on your costs at no cost to them. If your clients are consumers or small businesses, it makes you 20 percent more expensive. Decide on your client mix.
How much should I set aside for tax?
Income tax at your band plus 6 percent Class 4 National Insurance on profits above the lower limit, and remember payments on account. Use the simple mode of the tax set-aside calculator; its US mode does not apply here.
Can I charge interest on late payments?
Yes. UK law gives businesses a statutory right to interest at 8 percent above the Bank of England base rate on late commercial payments, plus a fixed compensation amount. The late payment calculator works it out.
