Freelancing in Latin America
This page collects published freelance rates for Brazil, Argentina, Colombia and Mexico, for people who sell to clients abroad or at home. Software development is the only profession with a rate for each country, so the page says plainly where the data stops.
What the data says about rates in Latin America
Published figures from sources dated within the last two years, in the currency and unit each source uses, with no conversion. Latin America is the thinnest region on this site. Only software development has a rate by country, and the other professions have none.
| Software development, mid level (2 to 5 years) | Median hourly rate on active contracts, third quarter 2026, middle half of contracts in brackets: Argentina 26 USD per hour (21 to 30), Brazil 35 (30 to 40), Colombia 26 (23 to 31), Mexico 30 (27 to 41). |
|---|---|
| Software development, senior (5 to 8 years) | Argentina 41 USD per hour (34 to 45), Brazil 42 (35 to 47), Colombia 34 (32 to 41), Mexico 40 (33 to 45). |
| Software development, 8 or more years | Argentina 50 USD per hour (45 to 54), Brazil 50 (45 to 55), Colombia 43 (42 to 45), Mexico 47 (45 to 53). |
| Comparison, same platform, senior | Network-wide senior medians: Latin America 40 USD per hour, Europe and UK 44, United States 68. |
| Platform work, all kinds (regional) | Survey of 1,153 platform workers in 21 Latin American and Caribbean countries, fielded 2023 and 2024: median 2.57 USD per hour counting paid and unpaid hours, average 5.48. Online freelancing alone: median 3.17, average 6.58. Paid hours only, all types: median 4.00, average 8.35. |
| Platform workers (Brazil) | National statistics office survey, 2025: average hourly earnings 16.2 BRL for platform workers against 18.4 BRL for other occupations, average monthly income 3,147 BRL against 3,148, and 44.7 weekly hours. |
How much to trust these
Confidence is medium for the developer rows and low for anything else. The developer figures come from one marketplace, Lemon.io, based on 29,902 active contracts, and its clients are largely US companies. They are export rates, what a developer charges a client abroad, not what a local client pays. Junior developers are excluded. Brazil's page gives two different senior ranges, and the figure shown is from its detail card.
The platform-worker rows describe another population. The regional survey and the Brazilian survey cover mostly microtask workers, drivers and couriers, so they show the local floor for platform work and not a professional freelance rate. Do not read the two sets as one market. The Brazilian figures were read through two news reports of the release, because the statistics office page could not be opened, and only one of the two gave the hourly number.
Selling to clients abroad or at home
Many freelancers here sell mainly to clients in the United States and Europe and are paid in dollars, while local clients pay in pesos or reais. The gap between the developer contract rates and the platform-worker floor above is large, so price for the market you sell into. Check what reaches your account after platform and exchange fees with the payment fee comparison. Registration, tax and invoicing rules differ in each country, so confirm them with the official authority or an accountant where you live. This page does not cover them.
Use the calculators
Start with the freelance rate calculator, which works from the income you want, your costs and the hours you can bill, in any currency. The figures above are a reference point for what others charge or get offered, and your own numbers should set the result. Profession pages with their own notes: web developer, WordPress developer, UX designer, virtual assistant, translator, copywriter.
- Invoice generator: a clean PDF invoice with your bank details, no signup.
- Payment fee comparison: what each payment route leaves in your account.
- Timezone meeting planner: working-hour overlap with clients in other regions.
Other countries: India, Philippines, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nigeria, Indonesia, United Kingdom, United States, European Union.
Frequently asked questions
Are the developer rates what a local client would pay?
No. They are what developers charge on active contracts through a marketplace whose clients are mostly in the United States. Local rates are lower, and no dated source found so far measures them by profession.
Why is there nothing for designers or writers?
No source dated within the last two years reports a rate for them in Argentina, Brazil, Colombia or Mexico. The rate pages for those professions use a global default and label it as not localised.
Which country has the highest developer rates?
At mid level Brazil has the highest median at 35 USD per hour against 26 in Argentina and Colombia and 30 in Mexico. At senior level Brazil, Argentina and Mexico are close at 42, 41 and 40, and Colombia is lower at 34.
